A three-day escape to Murchison Falls National Park is long enough to fit in game drives, incredible scenery, a boat experience on the Nile and some proper downtime without feeling like you have packed for an expedition.

If you are staying at Master Peace Resort in Masindi, you have the advantage of a comfortable base before or after your park adventure. That means you can pack smart, travel light and focus on enjoying the trip.

Murchison Falls is generally warm during the day, with cooler evenings, so the trick is to pack for sunshine, dust, the occasional shower and early-morning starts.

1. Light, Comfortable Clothes

For three days, you really do not need half your wardrobe. Pack a few lightweight T-shirts or breathable tops, comfortable trousers or shorts and something relaxed for your evenings back at Master Peace Resort. Neutral colours such as beige, brown, olive and grey work particularly well for game drives. They are comfortable in a safari setting and do not show dust quite as quickly. Add a light sweater or jacket too. Early starts and evenings can feel cooler than the middle of the day.

2. Comfortable Walking Shoes

You do not need heavy hiking boots unless your itinerary specifically calls for serious hiking. A good pair of trainers or comfortable closed shoes will handle most of your trip well. If you plan to visit viewpoints around the falls or spend time walking outdoors, choose something with decent grip. You may also want sandals or easy slip-on shoes for relaxing back at the resort.

3. Sun Protection

Murchison Falls can get hot, especially during the middle of the day.

Bring:

  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • A hat or cap
  • A reusable water bottle

These small things can make a surprisingly big difference when you are spending several hours outdoors.

4. Your Camera — or Just a Good Phone

You will probably take more photos than you expect. Between giraffes crossing the savannah, elephants in the distance, birdlife along the Nile and the sheer power of the falls, there is plenty worth capturing. A smartphone with a good camera is enough for most travellers. If you are bringing a proper camera, carry an extra battery, memory card and a small protective bag. And do not forget a power bank. A long game drive is not the best place to discover you are on 3%.

5. Binoculars

Binoculars are one of those things people sometimes think they can do without — until the guide points out a lion far across the grassland or a bird perched high in a tree. A small pair is easy to carry and can make wildlife viewing much more enjoyable.

6. Insect Repellent

You will be spending time around vegetation, water and open natural areas, so insect repellent is a sensible addition to your bag. Long trousers and long sleeves can also come in handy in the evenings.

7. A Small Day Bag

Leave the bigger luggage at your accommodation and carry a small backpack or shoulder bag for the day. Keep your essentials inside: water, sunscreen, phone, camera, sunglasses, snacks, tissues and anything else you want within easy reach. The goal is to have what you need without carrying your entire weekend around the park.

8. A Light Rain Jacket

Ugandan weather can change quickly. Even when the morning looks perfectly clear, a short shower can appear later in the day. A lightweight waterproof jacket folds easily into your bag and can save you from spending the rest of the afternoon slightly miserable and very wet.

9. Personal Essentials

Pack any medication you need, toiletries, identification and travel documents. It is also worth carrying a little cash for smaller expenses, alongside whatever other payment methods you normally use. If you are entering the national park or booking activities such as game drives or launch trips, make sure your arrangements and required documents are sorted before setting off. Uganda Wildlife Authority lists activities including game drives, launch trips and visits to the top of the falls.

10. Something Comfortable for the Resort

Your getaway does not have to be safari from sunrise to sunset. After a day in the park, it is nice to come back, shower, change into something comfortable, have a meal and simply slow down. Pack one casual evening outfit, swimwear if you plan to use the pool, and something you can comfortably wear while enjoying the quieter side of your stay at Master Peace Resort.

What You Probably Do Not Need

A three-day trip is short. Avoid overpacking.

You probably do not need multiple pairs of shoes, bulky luggage, several formal outfits or too many gadgets.

Pack around the experiences you actually plan to have: travel, game viewing, sightseeing, relaxing and dining.

That is usually enough.
